Full House for FMV Seminar & Plant Visit on Metals & Byproducts Symbiosis

On Monday 19 October, Flanders Metals Valley hosted an exclusive seminar with a plant visit, entirely dedicated to metals and byproducts symbiosis. Our FMV members came together to explore innovative approaches to metal recovery, byproduct valorization, and circular metallurgy. With no fewer than 25 motivated FMV members – a full house – the interest was overwhelming. Companies represented included Umicore, Aurubis, Molymet, Lamifil, Campine, Sweco, Aperam, Affilips and ABO Global.

The scientific session featured three fascinating talks:

  • Innovative solutions for the recycling of non-ferrous metals – Felipe Guerrero (JGI Hydrometal) explained how the company recovers and processes non-ferrous metals in innovative ways.
  • Creating a raw materials ecosystem through pilot testing facilities – Dr. Laurent Fraikin (CRM Group) showed how pilot facilities form the bridge between research and industrial application.
  • Low-carbon steelmaking and the critical role of slag materials – Prof. Inge Bellemans (UGent) discussed the crucial role slags play in the transition to low-carbon steelmaking.

Things then got very concrete. Participants first toured the Hydrometal facilities, including the laboratories and the processing installations for non-ferrous metals. The group then moved on to the CRM Group test hall, featuring:

  • the preparation room for critical raw materials;
  • the EAF pilot installation;
  • and, as an absolute highlight, the pilot-scale plasma furnace and the slag granulation unit, likewise on pilot scale.

The afternoon concluded with a networking reception, where guests had the opportunity to maintain and expand their networks – a pleasant chat and a drink as the foundation for future collaborations.

Thank You!

Our sincere thanks go to our hosts JGI Hydrometal and CRM Group, and to everyone who contributed to making this event a success. The combination of high-quality presentations, an inspiring site visit and enthusiastic participants made this afternoon a true triumph for the Flanders Metals Valley community.
