This role is a cornerstone within our Digital Innovation & AI division, responsible for steering advanced data science initiatives that inform strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise in data science, exemplary leadership qualities, and a strategic vision to enhance decision-making through data. The Senior Data Scientist Lead will spearhead the development and application of data analytics to drive business outcomes. You will mentor the site data scientists, instil best practices in data analysis, and lead innovative projects that translate complex data into actionable strategies. The Senior Data Scientist Lead is not only focused on advancing analytical techniques but also on cultivating a culture of continuous learning and data proficiency across the organization.

  • Unlocking Insights: Design, develop and deploy algorithms and predictive models to solve critical business problems as a product lead for key products and develop tools and libraries that will help local analytics team members more efficiently interface with vast amounts of data.
  • Building the Foundation: Creating best practices, guides, and training for everyone using Data Science at Nyrstar Group. Building a data science program for new data science projects and coach employees going through it for the first time.
  • Strategy & planning: Work with cross departmental teams to define metrics, guidelines, and strategies for effective use of algorithms and data. Work closely with local data scientists to identify, design, and build appropriate datasets for complex experiments.
  • Championing Excellence: Setting up a dedicated Data Science Center of Excellence to drive continuous learning and innovation.
  • Leading our data science community: Guiding and coaching our local data science team, fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration.
  • The Data Science Answer Person: Acting as the trusted resource for colleagues and business stakeholders on all things Data Science tools, projects and approaches.
  • Sharing Best Practices: Using mockups, POCs, and ongoing guidance to promote a data-driven culture.
  • Working with Teams: Work with Product Managers, Engineers, and Analytics teams to translate prototypes into production and understand their data needs.
  • Managing Roadmaps: Conduct research and make recommendations on big data infrastructure, database technologies, analytics tools, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts and manage roadmaps for enhancements on the long-term.

Profile

  • 8+ years experience in Data Science, with 5+ years in the production industry to understand the specific needs of large manufacturing companies (both time series, relational and transactional datasets).
  • Proven track record of leading data science programs, people and projects; strong management skills.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expertise in machine learning, predictive modeling, statistical analysis, and data mining; proficiency in Python, R, Scala.
    • Comfort manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources
    • Experience with big data technologies (Hadoop/Hbase, Spark) and SQL/NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with all data science domains (predictive maintenance, regression, classification).
  • Experience with handling large datasets and using quantitative approaches; familiarity with map/reduce frameworks and statistical tools (e.g., R, Matlab).
  • Proficient in English and have exceptional skills in conveying complex concepts to a non-technical audience. Dutch and/or French languages are a big plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; attention to detail; project management experience; understanding of organizational objectives and data privacy laws.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive problem solver, flexible, independent, collegial attitude, and a team player.
